I recently did this CD cover for a musical duo who call themselves Zippity2Dads. They do adult-friendly children’s music and they are a couple of really talented and nice guys. Check out their music if you get the chance, their third CD “Just Being A Kid” will be out in late December and you can find information on them at their site: www.zippity2dad.com.

Remembering Ginger
I was hired to come to a family’s home for a photo session with their kids and their two beautiful dogs, and they were in a hurry because one of the dogs, Ginger, had become very sick and didn’t have long to live. It was an emotional session, as you can imagine, because I was literally there to photograph Ginger’s last happy romp with the children. She was in pain, I could tell, and it took everything she had to keep going.
This was my favorite picture from the session. I wanted to capture Ginger looking at the camera, and I edited the final image to resemble an old and cherished family portrait.

In Natural Light
I love natural light. There’s really nothing like it for capturing people in a comfortable and believable way. There is a local pub in my area that has the best natural light for portraits. Big windows reach from the floor to the tall ceilings all around. Almost any time of day (or year for that matter) you can expect warm light from one direction or another. They’ve been talking with me about doing a calendar of the waitresses there and I think it would be incredible. (Model: Alisa W.)

Gotcha!
The trick to getting photos like these is simple: Use a fast camera set to track autofocus and take a long burst of shots right when the action starts. Luck is also an important component.

Wide Eyes
I love selective color, especially when it really adds something to the narrative of a picture. In this case I think it does just that, as our eyes are immediately drawn to the colorful rubber duck which is mesmerizing the baby. Then we look left and see the baby’s wide-eyed reaction to the duck, and it’s a great little story.

Ballerina
I was going for a soft, almost surreal look for this photograph, like a dream.

Some Remixing Goin’ On
I’ve been working over some old shots for the new site, swapping backgrounds and otherwise amping them up. Here are a few from a girl’s crazy birthday party shoot I did a few months ago. I was going for vibrancy and glam shine here (with a little “urban” in the first one for good measure) so put your sunglasses on!
